Outsiders is a documentary photography project by Marc Davenant which captures a snapshot of homelessness in modern Britain.

Homelessness in this case is taken in a broad sense to mean anyone who does not have access to a safe, stable, and habitable home environment. This can include people who are sleeping rough, are sofa surfing or are living in substandard housing.

The project includes personal testimony from the participants alongside environmental monochrome portraits taken using a mix of digital and vintage film cameras.

“Looking at Marc Davenant’s portraits of homeless people living in the UK isn’t easy, but that’s the point.

His stark black & white images might look like they were shot in the 1970s or 80s, but they depict the living conditions many are enduring right now.

From London to Manchester and Glasgow, this project documents what it is like not to have a bedroom, a kitchen or a toilet - things that many of us take for granted”
