In “Historic Heroes”, children will consider 'what makes a hero?' within the context of Black History Month.
During the workshop they will learn about 4 individuals who demonstrated heroism and bravery in completely different contexts and whilst facing different obstacles created by racism:
- Harriet Tubman
- Walter Tull
- Katherine Johnson
- Ruby Bridges and the Little Rock Nine.
Students will be encouraged to think about how individual circumstances might affect whether someone’s actions are brave, and to consider context as they come to their own conclusions.
The workshop focuses on teaching historical skills as well as Black history content, including chronology, source analysis, critical thinking, and historical empathy.
Adjusted to suit Year 2 - Year 8, each class will explore these skills and individuals in ways appropriate to their ages, whilst also enjoying a workshop filled with role-play, object handling, games, and active participation for all.
The workshop will take place at St Albans Museum + Gallery from the last week in September until October half term.
