In Summer 2021 Trestle Theatre Company celebrated their 40th Anniversary. We charted the history of the company and allowed our visitors to discover the extraordinary theatre and education work that they have created over the past four decades.
The exhibition encompassed everything, from past shows and the development of their surprising and engaging mask sets to the wonderful stories of those working with Trestle in 2021. Visitors were given the opportunity to enjoy the theatricality of Trestle's bespoke masks and behind the scenes objects and artefacts and uncover the history of this internationally renowned Theatre Company.
Trestle is a mask and physical theatre company based at Trestle Arts Base in St Albans. The Company began in 1981 travelling around the UK with their wonderful masks, ready to perform wherever people watched. Trestle was soon performing all over the world and in the 1990s began working in schools with its unique full mask sets. In 2002 Trestle won the tender from St Albans District Council to convert the chapel of Hill End Hospital into Trestle Arts Base. Since then, Trestle has made a creative community in St Albans, whilst continuing to take shows and workshops across the UK and internationally. Each year Trestle sells around 5000 masks to over 30 countries worldwide, all individually hand made in St Albans.
