The Alban Arena, Civic Centre
“Hello, I’m the Alban Arena. Many people have visited me since I was built for the council in 1968. Over the years, I have been home to pantomimes, comedy, films, theatre and concerts and everyone has enjoyed themselves.
But do you know the history behind me? I was designed by a world famous architect called Sir Frederick Gibberd. He designed me in his favourite modernist style, though he designed many other famous buildings elsewhere in different styles.
Sir Frederick designed me to look like a liner crossing the oceans, with open decks, big windows and a flag post and standing in water, well – ponds! Have a look next time you go there for the evening.
When you go inside you will be impressed by the space and comfort. But as you stand in the foyer with a coffee or a glass of wine, you won’t see my secret under the carpet. A Roman mosaic brought from Verulamium. But use your imagination and remember how much the Romans loved the theatre!”
