Alex Ayliffe’s work explores boundaries, borders and edges, questioning how we interact with them.
Responding to today’s paradox of us being both more connected, yet subject to a host of physical barriers and emotional constraints, the paintings suggest how everything is connected, how everything contains everything else, and how boundaries and barriers shape our perception.
Ayliffe’s paintings explore both an inner landscape of emotion and an outer geographical landscape. The artist uses colour, texture and scale to create the notion of a place within a place.

After graduating from Westminster University in 1983, Alex Ayliffe pursued a fulltime career in illustration. Initially working for magazines and advertising companies, but later specialising in children’s books. In 2000, she won the Sainsbury's prize for children's illustration.
In 2017 she enrolled in an MA course in Fine Art at the University of Hertfordshire, determined to expand her artistic skills and knowledge. Ayliffe’s main area of focus in the MA has been abstract art, which has been a huge step in her artistic development. She is now planning to paint full time.

Hertfordshire Open 2020
This artwork was selected for the first Hertfordshire Open Exhibition. The exhibition online galleries are hosted between www.uharts.co.uk and www.stalbansmuseums.org.uk and will be launched in stages throughout April 2020.
Over 180 artists with links to Hertfordshire submitted their work to be part of the inaugural exhibition. Chosen by an independent panel of judges, the exhibition features 80 stunning works by the 50 selected artists, creating an exciting mix of work by established artists alongside emerging talent and first-time exhibitors.
