Alexandra Barakova uses her unique perspective as an expat from the Czech Republic. She uses documentary photography to capture moments that may be overlooked, ignored, compared or judged around her.
Temporary I depicts a common local act of taking a nap on a train platform, against the backdrop of a progressive Belgrade after bombings, corruption and the Kosovo war.
Temporary II presents the artist’s experience of pushing this lady to the end of the tunnel with a view of Jaipur, the Pink city.
Permanent I poignantly captures her great-grandmother – wife to the first Czechoslovakian indologist and a smuggler of dictionaries.
Alexandra Barakova
Alexandra Barakova moved to St Albans a year ago. As a Czech national with a Somerset partner, she found a home here. Working in the heart of the community in the local museum and gallery helped Barakova connect with and understand English mentality, culture and its diverse perception.
2008: Debut photo exhibition, Café Mercury, Prague

2017: Third solo exhibition, Café Meloun, Prague
2018: Exhibited alongside artist Saif Osmani in an exhibition involving local communities, academics and MA/PhD students at Loughborough University London

Hertfordshire Open 2020
This artwork was selected for the first Hertfordshire Open Exhibition. The exhibition online galleries are hosted between www.uharts.co.uk and www.stalbansmuseums.org.uk and will be launched in stages throughout April 2020.
Over 180 artists with links to Hertfordshire submitted their work to be part of the inaugural exhibition. Chosen by an independent panel of judges, the exhibition features 80 stunning works by the 50 selected artists, creating an exciting mix of work by established artists alongside emerging talent and first-time exhibitors.
