Graphite, Papier mâché, oil paint and wire
Through making by hand, Anna Ray explores the visual and emotive potential of materials. Experimenting with predominantly fibre-based materials such as silk, cotton, velvet, wool and paper, Ray examines their potential to be transformed using domestic equipment and tools. Her work often blurs the boundaries between two- and three-dimensional forms.
Graphite is an atmospheric work, created using feathers of papier mâché and wet oil paint with graphite powder dusted over the surface. The piece is an exploration of the elements of drawing, yet settles somewhere between a painting, a drawing and a gesture.
Anna Ray
From 1994-1999 Anna Ray studied BA (Hons) and MFA Tapestry at Edinburgh College of Art. She became a lecturer in the department soon after graduation and taught for six years before relocating to London in 2006. Ray was resident artist at Winterbourne Botanic Garden, The RHS Chelsea Flower Show, Dash + Miller, and Forbo Flooring for Art in Manufacturing at The National Festival of Making. She has been granted major awards and has exhibited nationally and internationally over the last 25 years in both applied art and fine art contexts.

Hertfordshire Open 2020
This artwork was selected for the first Hertfordshire Open Exhibition. The exhibition online galleries are hosted between www.uharts.co.uk and www.stalbansmuseums.org.uk and will be launched in stages throughout April 2020.
Over 180 artists with links to Hertfordshire submitted their work to be part of the inaugural exhibition. Chosen by an independent panel of judges, the exhibition features 80 stunning works by the 50 selected artists, creating an exciting mix of work by established artists alongside emerging talent and first-time exhibitors.
