Pirouette, 2019, Jesmonite
Lil Cahill’s practice explores representations of the body and the formation of taste, value and excess. She constructs a vocabulary of pictures and symbols associated with the handmade and mass-produced. The imagery originates from the artist’s own fascination with foodstuffs, and the absurd, grotesque way in which it is advertised and then normalised once in our homes.
Pirouette references the linear, rhythmic pattern created by a gentle drip of melted cheese. Its outline suggests an arabesque, and the drips configurations of dance, dressage and Rococo; allowing a pizza advert dripping with cheese to perform as erotically as pornography or as elegantly as an arabesque in ballet.
Lil Cahill
Lil Cahill lives and works between Hertfordshire and London. Gaining her BA at the University of Hertfordshire (2017), Cahill went on to graduate from the Royal College of Art with a Masters in Sculpture in July 2019.
In October 2019 she was a part of an emerging show at Lumen Crypt Gallery, London, entitled The Last Bus Home – an artist-led project that she ran with two other artists. In April 2019 she was part of a collaborative residency and show called Dirty Hands and Revelations at Standpoint Gallery, London. She is currently exhibiting at the MK Open 2020 in MK Gallery.

Hertfordshire Open 2020
This artwork was selected for the first Hertfordshire Open Exhibition. The exhibition online galleries are hosted between www.uharts.co.uk and www.stalbansmuseums.org.uk and will be launched in stages throughout April 2020.
Over 180 artists with links to Hertfordshire submitted their work to be part of the inaugural exhibition. Chosen by an independent panel of judges, the exhibition features 80 stunning works by the 50 selected artists, creating an exciting mix of work by established artists alongside emerging talent and first-time exhibitors.
