The Mansion, 1 St Peter’s Street
“Hello! I’m No. 1 St Peters Street, on the corner with Spencer Street. Once I was owned by important people like Sarah, first Duchess of Marlborough – she came from St Albans you know. Sarah left me to her grandson, John Spencer. Spencer Street which they cut through my garden is named after his family, the family Princess Diana came from.
Sadly, I’ve been knocked about a bit over the 400 years I’ve been around. It’s hard to see now how good looking I once was. My brickwork has faded, my stonework has weathered and those shop fronts don’t do me any favours at all.
But much worse happened to my insides. Once there were panelled walls, wood carvings and stone fireplaces, but not now. Stripped out and mostly sent to America, would you believe. People did protest – there was even a letter in The Times – but much good it did.
So, only a few of my original features remain today – not much more than the timbers which hold me up really. But at least I’m still here!”
