The Forrester House mosaic, St Peter’s Street
“Hi, I’m the mosaic mural. I bet you have walked past me many times and never even noticed me. Next time you walk past the bakers and the betting shop near the post office look up. And there I am!
I’m on the front of Forrester House, the first building finished in the 1960s Civic Centre. I’m designed by William Mitchell, who often worked with Sir Frederick Gibberd, designer of Forester House and the Alban Arena behind me.
William Mitchell is a sculptor and over 90 now. Maybe his most famous work is the Egyptian escalator and hall in Harrods.
I’m made of a variety of materials; glass, pottery and concrete. I tell the whole story of St. Albans from earliest times. Look carefully and see if you can find the numerals of the Roman Legions, St Alban, Tudor Roses and the City and Cathedral’s coats of arms.
I’m a real masterpiece and I bet you didn’t even know I was here!”
