The Christopher Inn, 3 – 9 French Row
“The carved, grotesque half well-endowed woman, half beast figure you can see on the arched entrance to my yard is one of the few original features of when I was The Christopher Inn. This succubus was said to be a sign of a medieval brothel. A brothel! These days people just call it “The Boobie Lady”.
I was one of the most popular, prosperous and grandest hostels in St Albans in the 1500’s. Oh, you should have seen the two new fine large chambers I had added in the 1660’s – with panelling and carved fireplaces. I had 14 chambers then making me the second largest inn in St Albans.
Where did it all go wrong? I’ll tell you – Neptune Smith! The notorious pub landlord! Not only did he sell his vote in the by-election in 1851, but he was found guilty of running a brothel from within my crumbling walls. But I’ve had a face lift since then so come along to French Row and see what you think!”
