The ‘Passport to Leisure’ project was set up in 1998 to provide much needed social activities for adults with learning disabilities in the local area. The project is led by Salpi Gulbekian, Active Community Disability Officer at Everyone Active, along with a team of dedicated volunteers.
Passport to Leisure consists of various groups who meet for a wide range of activities through the week and at weekends. It enables members to get together with their peers, learn new skills, engage in meaningful activity, make new friends and have fun. The project regularly partners with other organisations and local groups, as it is important for members to be part of their local community. This activity benefits mental health and wellbeing, and encourages independence, as well as providing respite for carers.
Over the coming year we will be working with Passport to Leisure to organise fun activities and opportunities for learning. The group have decided to name their residency ‘Roman Club’, and members have said that they want to learn more about archaeology, hold some real Roman things, see some sword demonstrations, do arts and crafts, do performances, go on trips to the British Museum and to help St Albans Museums in any way they can.
We are delighted to have Passport to Leisure as our Community in Residence and can’t wait to see what the year brings. Look out for associated activities and events that are open to the wider public and hopefully you will be able to meet the members of 'Roman Club' sometime soon!
