Search Tips - Subject Search

This is a different way to search our collections and is particularly useful if are not sure what you are looking for, or what we hold, or if you simply want to browse and explore.

The subject index classifies images by different key words and themes, which generally relate to whatever is depicted in the image. Because of this it is a useful search if you are more interested in what an image shows, rather than a particular type of print, artist, historical period, etc.

The subject search is the best place to start if you are looking for all the images we hold of a particular location. For example, if you wished to search for images of Harpenden, you would go to:

Places > Places in Hertfordshire > Harpenden.

The best way to understand how the subject index works is simply to explore the different categories.

If you are a teacher, you may be interested in using the Education Resources subject keywords to find images for use in projects and in the classroom.
